Stop Dog Snoring

Although this website is predominantly devoted to snoring in humans, many people want to stop dog snoring as well. It can be a real irritation and concern! It can be entertaining (for house guests, at least, who don't have to live with it), as you can see in this video clip:

More seriously, snoring in dogs is very common and is generally caused by a narrowing of the throat or nasal passages. Like humans, obesity can be a major source of the problem and helping your dog to slim down can eliminate the snoring.

Snoring breeds

Some breeds are more likely to snore than others, such as pugs, pekingese and bulldogs due to the way their heads and nasal passages are shaped. Some breeds breathe more heavily than others and it is these dogs that are more likely to snore. Dogs with flatter facial features have smaller air passages and consequently have more trouble breathing.

Health

Sometimes respiratory allergies can contribute to snoring - so you may want to pay attention to whether there is a seasonal pattern to the snoring, or if it is worse after the house is dusted.

Age is another contributor to snoring in dogs. Unsurprisingly, as dogs get older, they are more likely to snore.

Checklist

So, to stop dog snoring, consider the following:

1. Have your vet check if there is any blockage in the airway that could be corrected, or any allergies that could be treateed.

2. If your dog is overweight, put it on an appropriate eating and exercise plan. Your vet can advise you.

3. If you have a breed that is prone to snoring, your vet may be able to perform a surgical procedure that can lessen airway obstruction.

4. If your dog is otherwise healthy, have your dog sleep in another room and provide lots of pillows and family toys. If you get desperate, you can always wear ear plugs!
