Snore Guard

snore guard

Snore Guard is small mouthpiece worn during sleep. The aim of the product is to stop snoring by stopping the jaw and tongue from slipping back into the throat and obstructing breathing. Snore Guard works by keeping the airway open.

This could be a helpful product for "tongue-snorers" or "palate flutterers". It is important to know if you fall into either of these categories in order to select an appropriate treatment.

What is a tongue-snorer? When some people sleep, their throat muscles and soft tissues relax and the lower jaw and tongue drop back, constricting the air passage. This causes a stronger force of air to push through the airway during each breath. This increased velocity makes these soft tissues in the throat and mouth vibrate or flap.

When this problem is really bad, the air passage becomes fully blocked to the point where the lungs do not receive oxygen for up to 30 seconds, when the brain is signalled to wake up, and the person starts gasping for air briefly before descending into sleep again. This is known as obstructive sleep apnea - it is a serious condition. Often it is only bed partners or others that can observe sleep, that will see this. A person with sleep apnea is only likely to notice that they wake feeling unrested and are very tired during the day.

How does Snore Guard work?

The manufacturer says that the mouthpiece fits on the upper teeth during sleep. When the lower jaw closes, the bottom teeth touch the ramp that is part of the device and are guided naturally along it to keep the jaw in a forward position. An opening between the upper and lower part of the device allows air to flow in and out of the mouth and draws the tongue forward. Holding the tongue and lower jaw more forward during sleep is how the device achieves a snoring reduction.

Snore Guard is individually fitted by a dentist. The image above is what it typically looks like.
